The Spolia

Spolia as a notion refers to re-use of old existing building elements and material, or an integration of earlier often symbolically charged building elements. The practice was common in late antiquity. Entire obsolete structures, including underground foundations, are known to have been demolished to enable the construction of new structures. Barker, A. Philip (1977). Techniques of Archaeological Excavation. Routledge. p. 11.
