Kirsten Sand Own Home

Detail model

The detail in model focuses on one of Kirsten Sands trademarks, a small upper-floor airing balcony. Sunlight was associated with hygiene during the functionalism era and was thought to stop bacteria. Amid the tuberculosis fight in 1940s-50s Norway, Sand introduced the airing balcony in the north, arguing that it would benefit housewives in their daily work.

Despite skepticism from male architects, women embraced the balcony, making it a staple in reconstruction houses.
