Feeling of sight

Can the profession of architecture at large engage a form of practice that no longer places the act of making buildings as a central and defining role of an architect?
If we are not making buildings, are we still contributing to society? The chance to make a building comes in a later stage and there is always a topic of authorship and being acknowledged for the work. So what if in the future we stop building? We create, design and leave everything to the
virtual world? What if we move the final goal from “physical building that will happen once or twice in an architect’s life” to “designing spaces that are never built but start the conversation”? The central focus is shifted and
architects are more focused on the imagination and free space? Architect is not defined by how many physical buildings he or she has been able to produce but how much imagination he puts into creating a space that is not physical and what is the conversation around it? Can we touch the
socially important questions with virtual buildings and virtual design? These spaces are used as a starting point of an argument and discussions in any topic.
Focus on the bigger picture and conversations you can get from it. Any outcome can be useful. On the other hand, when making a physical
building a million things could go wrong. Speculative architect Liam Young is somebody who is solemnly focused on creating virtual spaces in order to start different conversations. Would this be more popular in the future, would more architects turn to creating this? This way of designing could also be seen as a safety net for an architect. He/she would be creating a space that is totally imaginary, it could be interpreted in any way people want, like an abstract act. The artist has an initial idea but that idea is
expanded with every new person watching it.
In the matter of my location, Skanstorget, there are raising questions about what should be done with the space and how to change it, if indeed it needs to change. On one side there are people claiming that they don’t want a physical building and on the other side is a city with a practical
solution for a density problem. Creating a non physical building or a space to start the conversation and raise more important and different questions. Maybe by creating a space that is virtual we can show to people and the city some new questions and topics to focus on and find a solution for the place.

the old look of Skanstorget

The final result for the project was reached after the exploration of
different methods and reading about the topics that were related to the project.
Location for the project is Skanstorget, there is a debate about what to do with this space and what is the best solution. I tried to connect AR, future role of an architect and location problems in my projects.
I asked what if the future role of an architect is not to build but to raise questions and conversations with his designs and explorations? What if his designs are reachable to anyone by AR? All these questions led me to massing, exploration about the structures that could be put on the
location. By seeing these structures through AR people can start the
conversation and see what is the best solution for the location. Nothing is built but they are given options of what is possible and they can choose. Right now people only had two options to choose from for the location and both solutions are fairly similar, but there should be more and
designs should be talking different languages.
My inspirations for structures came from history of a place, surrounding or my imagination. I tried to show as many variants of structures as I could see. Incorporating big and small structures, one or many structures,
organic or straight shapes, connected or not to the surrounding.
I used photoshop, pictures and sketches to create a collage of different options and ideas I had. All options have a small comment about it. If I was working on this for my Master Thesis I would continue exploring with the massing and trying to find what is the best solution so both parties in this debate are satisfied.
The AR is only used as a tool from which people can see these massing structures and explore what can happen. I didn’t have the time nor the equipment to make an AR app and try it in real life but that would also be interesting to make if I was going further with this project. The final result for the project was reached after the exploration of
