Cities are in continuous transition. Dwellers come and go, cultures meet, innovation thrives, and the built environment is constantly transforming. But what happens to our heritage when the cityscape changes?
SCOPE
This thesis is a response to future needs and a reminder of the potential in the existing. The aim is to ensure that heritage and cultural values can thrive and adapt to urban development and sustainable solutions. This is achieved with a phenomenological approach as means to strengthen our connectedness to heritage. And the outcome is a transformation proposal for the old calf butchery at the slaughterhouse in Gamlestaden, Gothenburg.
Thesis questions
– Can architecture reveal, and tend to, collective memories of a place?
– How can the slaughterhouse’s heritage outlive urban renewal?
