Digital Ornaments – An exploration of ornament design using digital workflows

Introduction

This work explores the notion of ornament in relation to digital modeling and fabrication tools. The rise of digital tools is changing the possible design, fabrication and application of ornamental features and can make possible what was previously impossible. However, as intriguing as it is with new tools and materials, one could ask the question of what the relevance of their potential is within our practice. To investigate this initial question, this work looks at the creation of digital ornaments through adopting an explorative design approach.

How can we use digitally generated effects actively when designing and fabricating ornaments?

How can we purposefully implement digital workflows when translating an intuitive design ambition into a physical architectural element?
